OPPORTUNITY COSTS Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

OPPORTUNITY COSTS - Coursework Example EXPLAIN THE CONCEPTS OF COMPARATIVE AND ABSOLUTE ADVANTAGE The concept of ‘Comparative and Absolute Advantage’ holds primary importance being closely related to profit maximization and increased productivity. It principally indicates the capability of a producer to manufacture products and/or services at a lesser opportunity cost than other producers operating in almost identical conditions. A comparative advantage provides a company the capacity to trade goods, products and services at a lower fee than other players in the market for the purpose of attaining higher sales margins and revenues. In the similar context, the concept of obsolete advantage can be identified when a company produces larger volume of goods than that of its competitors with a given amount of resources. In both these situations, companies are affirmed to obtain advantages over its competitors in terms of cost of production and profit margin (Horsley 1-99). For example, in case the USA and Canada ha ve been producing differing quantities of potatoes and rice in a year [as illustrated in the below table], both the producers will have to incur differing opportunity cost. ... Assessing both these situations, it can be observed that Canada will have a comparative advantage in producing larger volume of potatoes, with the given amount of resources and also by incurring lesser opportunity cost. Thus, Canada should produce potatoes. HOW DOES TRADE AFFECT THE PRODUCTION POSSIBILITIES FRONTIER? EXPLAIN Production possibilities frontier, in simple terms, can be referred to as a frontier or a graph indicating the maximum output producing possibilities for a particular producer to manufacture two products at a given point of time. Indicating all possible combinations of the given two products, the production possibilities frontier tends to conclude the possible points at which the producer can manufacture at a greater production level in comparison to the other commodity’s normal production level with the fixed amount of resources (Horsley 1-99). Trade can affect the production possibilities frontier in a positive as well as in a negative manner. For instan ce, if the activities related to trade and commerce increases in a country, the requirement of the resources and production capacity with respect to two given commodities is also quite likely to increase (Horsley 1-99). Precisely, the concept of production possibilities frontier indicates the points at which a producer can make the maximum use of the resources allocated to produce one or more commodities. Notably, the points on the curved line of production possibilities frontier [refer to the diagram below] depicts efficiency of the producer to use the given amount of resources to produce maximum amount of product A and product B. On the contrary, the points below the curved line depict the inefficiency of the producer to make effective use of the resources allocated.

Marketing strategies of the Sage Gateshead Case Study

Marketing strategies of the Sage Gateshead - Case Study Example The intention of this study is Sage Gateshead as a famous centre for musical performance, education and conference situated in Gateshead on the south bank of River Tyne, which is found in the North-East of England. It began operations in 2004 although it was launched sometimes back in 1950s. The location of Sage is part of the Gateshead Quays development which encompass the BALTIC basis for modern Art and the Millennium bridge of Gateshead. The Sage Gateshead region entails a â€Å"curvy glass and stainless steel† construction modeled by Foster and associates, Buro Happold who participated as structural engineer, Arup as an acoustic and Mott Macdonald – building services, with observations from Gateshead Quayside and Newcastle, Tyne Bridge and the millennium bridge at Gateshead. The entire planning and development process cost more than 70 million pounds, money that was contributed mainly using the National Lottery grants. The main outworker was Laing O’Rourke. S age Gateshead centre has a variety of patrons, mainly the Sage Group Plc who raised a big lot of money to have the construction in their name. They have also been playing vital role in supporting generous activities of the Sage Gateshead since its outset. The research analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis). The paper also answers vital questions concerning Sage Gateshead that helps to bring out a clear image of Sage Gateshead. ... It examines its history, facts and figures about Sage Gateshead, its marketing strategy and how it outshines its strongest competitors in the region. The paper also looks at its SWOT Analysis where it examines the strongholds of the company and its weak points and threats (Furnivall, 1999). Brief History of Sage Gateshead The Sage Gatehead’s Concourse is mostly compared to a large railway station or airport fatal and the hustling and bustling crowds and absolute scale of the space under the high-ceilinged roof surely induced that idea. However, the comparison continues since to get into The Sage Gateshead is to link together with other travelers on a voyage of musical exploration that started several years ago and has several achievable destinations (Foster and Sargent, 2007). The initial departure point was the identification for opportunities for the North East people to participate in live music whether as contestants, listeners or student were extremely restricted by inade quacy of facilities of the type that were present in almost every other provinces of England. This means that North Eastern region was lugging behind in terms of entertainment and learning about musical concepts. In early 1990s, through motivation from Northern Arts and artistes, the now famous pop group of Northern Sinfonia started functioning on plans for a new performance hall (Menon, et al., 1999). They were soon joined by the folk development group, the Folk works which hastily became obvious to all who believed that what was required was â€Å"more than just a performance hall† (Mcgregor, 2008). During the same time, it was noted that the region had several young individuals interested in

Electrical & electronic principles ( lap report ) AC power Assignment

Electrical & electronic principles ( lap report ) AC power - Assignment Example Using the oscilloscope, the current and the voltage waveforms supplies were observed and determined alongside determining the lead or lag angle for the circuit. Various capacitor values were recorded with keen interest in observing their trend. The circuit was first connected with R1 s the coil resistance, with R2 as the low Ohm resistor already used. The component values were all recorded accordingly. Then using the oscilloscope, the current and the voltage supplies were observed, as well as used in determining the lag angle for the circuit. Finally, the data for various capacitors were recorded. Whenever the capacitor is by-passed by an emitter, and capacitance of the coupled capacitor is large in regards to the AC frequency signal, the capacitors would be approximated as a circuit that is short (Alamo, Swirhum & Swanson, 2005). Whenever the input signal or voltage is increased the output voltage and the signal would be further vary around the dc bias point that has been established (Roulston, 2007). This effect would continue up to when the limiting condition of the voltage is reached. For the current in the circuit, the limiting condition would be VCC/RC, at the end, considered to be high, and a zero at the end considered to be low of the swing. The voltage of the emitter collector and the supply limit reaches a limit when they have a zero and VCC. Additionally, the voltage output and the varying current around the point of bias give out ac power towards the load (Zeubman, 2008). The delivered ac power is made to go through the load referred to as RC. AC signal, on the ot her hand, makes the current in the base to be varied around the bias dc current and the current collector around its level of quiescent. The input signal leads to ac signal voltage and the ac current. Increasing the input signal would increase the output swing until when the maximum

Better Place Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Better Place Company - Essay Example The headquarters of the company is located in Israel at the R&D center, at Palo Alto and also in California. The use of such vehicles will reduce the risks that are caused by the harmful emissions of carbon. It is as a result of this that most of the governments, organizations and businesses have prioritised the need for reducing the effects of carbon emissions. Mission. To be a company that is able to hasten the change in the automobile industry from the use of vehicles that are oil based and promote the adoption of vehicles that use electricity- renewable energy. Vision Better Place vision is to be able to create linkages among car companies, utilities, battery companies and also consumers in order to successful promote the adoption of EVs. Stakeholders Stakeholders in a company are mainly the people, groups or organizations that draw certain interest towards the business strategy of a company. Better Place Company is supported by majority stakeholders who have interest in the prod uct that is being generated by the company (Johnson, p153). Stakeholder’s expectations are a major concern that the manager of Better Place had to deal with due to the fact that the success of the adoption of the Electric Vehicles depended on the decisions that were made by the stakeholders. Being an automobile company Better Place stakeholders include car companies, automobile manufacturers, governments, utility companies, battery manufacturers, investors and potential consumers for the Electric Vehicles. Better Place stakeholders can be classified into three groups (Johnson, p155): Technological stakeholders-This group of stakeholders involve the competitors that bring up new technologies with an aim of making improvements in the standards of the industry. Economic stakeholders-They involve the competitors, the suppliers and the manufacturers. In the case of the company it involves the car companies, automobile manufacturers and the battery manufacturers. Socio/political st akeholders-such stakeholders include governments as well as various agencies that are interested in the business strategy of the company. The rollout strategy of Better Place was adopted by various governments such as Japan, Australia, Hawaii, Toronto, Israel and Canada. Despite the go ahead by most stakeholders Better place faced a number of challenges while trying to affect the use of their business model. The first challenge focussed on the company’s reputation: Better Place lacked a convincing marketing strategy and as a result it was quite hard for consumers to adopt its product. The other challenge was focused on the company trying to convince the various stakeholders that the adoption of the EVs as a mode of transport that would be viable. The figure below shows the stakeholder mapping of the power/interest matrix: The customers in segment B are those that are largely supportive of Better Place business strategy. Customers in segment C are those that are hostile and th e customers in segment D are those that are indifferent. The investors, car companies and the government in segment D are of major importance to the company due to the fact that acceptability of the strategy depends solely on them and thus they hold the highest power as the key players. Utility Companies also hold vital role as key players for instance governments were offering rebates imposed on tax on the electric vehicles in order to achieve renewable energy objectives. Manufacturers of batteries and automobile in segment B play the role of ensuring there are adequate supplies of the components required by the EVs. Industry and scenario Analyses

Global Studies Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Global Studies - Research Paper Example The imposition fact is ascertained through the investigation and study of politics in different parts of the world. While bulk of the African continent is characterized by impoverished state of existence, there are exceptions that invoke serious thinking beyond a pre conceived mind set. One of the examples given by James Robinson and Daron Acemoglu is that of Botswana- a minnow state in continent, yet its standing compared to the neighboring region is far more different in terms of the social and economic level of prosperity. Its standing in terms of the per capita income allows it a seat amongst the likes of Costa Rica, Argentina and Russia. The very near neighboring zone comprising of the likes of Congo and other names of destitute depict a sorry tale of affairs in political and economic domain. Hence it is the doing of local brain, internal assessment and administration that determine the overall outlook of a nation in terms of its success or failure. Other similar example present ed by the author is that of the Korean Peninsula. The two adjoining neighbors (South Korea and North Korea) enjoy a different level of social standing, prosperity, GDP, per capita income). The demographics of the two countries are as identical as the biological twins, yet it is the policies, maneuvering of the economic and political activity that leads to either prosperity of poverty. The same stands true on the GDP per capita income of the two nations with South Korea ranked at a position of 48 (World bank Indicators) while North Korea at the rock bottom of the list, all to the internal policies and priorities. The former adopted a policy that was people friendly, ushered economic activity, provided freedom on business fronts, incorporated businesses locally and abroad. It is the mindset within that restricts prosperity. Number of events and traces can be extracted from the era of Industrial revolution. Industrial revolution was one event in the modern history that significantly ch anged the outlook of businesses, economy and countries standing among others. However despite the effective presence of such a vibrant force of industrial revolution certain societies failed to attain the goals and fruit from the potential of industrial revolution. One of the country that stands at the top of this list is Russia. Driven by a Tsarist ruler, Peter The Great, the fear of people’s empowerment led to the distancing of technology, advancements from people. The ruling elite feared that the weapon of progress and prosperity via Industrial revolution would give people more power to act, think and respond accordingly. His power, authority, resources, brainstorming, think tank, all were vested around the strengthening of the political grip rather than cashing in on the valuable gem that had been gifted to the entire Europe in form of industrial revolution. Hence the maintenance of status quo demanded keeping the effective tool of industrial revolution from the people. T he decay process was not just limited to internal hatchery of unjust acts, rather the process of stagnation, isolation and exploitation was accomplished and aided by the external force in the form of Colonial powers intrusion into different societies. The colonial trends resulted in a visible gulf between the locals and the usurpers who had forcefully handicapped the culture and society of the locals therein. Adam Smith has invested his thoughts and research in determining the

Challenges of International Operations Management Essay

Challenges of International Operations Management - Essay Example The assumption of TQM is quite apparent: quality improvement can be attained if a firm drafts a management philosophy of continuous improvement and breeds the required best practices (Juran, 1993). Gradually and patiently, majoritiy of international organisations have been effective at the implementation of TQM practices during the previous decade, with more than satisfactory outcomes. For instance, United Parcel Service, Motorola, Ford, Cadillac, Nestlà ©, Airbus, Shell, Toyota and Phillips are some of the more popular TQM achievers in the global marketplace. However, it may be worthy to note that their quality practices took substantial time and paitence to conceptualise, draft, and implement. Much more so, was the time necessary for these best practices to mature and to be maintained. Quality gurus such as Deming, Juran, Scholtes and Crosby taught that organisations ought to adopt a quality improvement approach from a long-term perspective. They also gave a warning that attaining some quality improvement may somewhat lead to complacency. Moreover, they concur that obstacles to quality may include a whole host of factors, encompassing both novel and current organisationa issues (Walton, 1986). Quality experts contend that majority of quality enhancement research are inclined on concentrating on the initial start-up phase of the improvement process and is somewhat lacking on considering long-term challenges (Mann & Kehoe, 1995). Studies on organisational life cycles and organisational development has apparently illustrated that as firms grow, mature, and grow more stable, several issues are brought forth at each cycle of the phase. Certain quality gurus hold a similar perspective on the quality improvement cycle that exists as the firm proceeds through an initial s tart-up, followed by a development phase at which maturity as a TQM firm ensues (Harrington, 1987). The initial TQM start-up phase necessitates breaking exercises the

My adult learning style Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

My adult learning style - Research Paper Example This is why it was highly important to take the learning styles inventory to understand what factors involved with learning are most effective at helping the individual to comprehend. The results of the study indicate that I tend to be an aural learner, scoring a 13 on the inventory. Closely behind was logical with a score of 12, physical scoring 11, and verbal learning with a nine score. Largely, based on the inventory, I am considered to be a balanced learner who is able to comprehend information from many different learning activities. As an aural learner, music and sound are often quality methods in the learning process. Aural learners learn by hearing information and the student fitting this profile would generally â€Å"like class lectures and small group discussions, listening in class more than taking notes† (Korybut, 2009, p.1). From a personal reflective standpoint, I have always found considerable value in classroom environments with teachers who are strong lecturers without really ever having a personal need for note-taking in order to be engaged with the teacher’s discussions. This type of presentational teaching helps me to stay focuse d on what is being taught orally where comprehension is simply a matter of recalling what has been heard. Further, having the balance between different learning styles would also give me the ability to explore many different learning methods to find which one is best-suited to long-term comprehension. For instance, logical learners â€Å"prefer using logic, reasoning and systems† (learning-styles-online.com, 2009, p.1). Though I have not always had a knack for statistics or the use of complicated systems, logic is a very large part of how I absorb information. For example, if a lecturer provides information which is not very relevant or seems to be stemming from opinion rather than experience, I find myself rejecting the information and can no longer focus on what is
